Let’s get Morecambe to no.1!

Morecambe Bay Tourist Association and the Town Council have come up with a novel idea to put Morecambe fully on the tourist map over the next few months by endorsing a Facebook campaign that sees local girl Ashleigh Wood get the classic ‘Bring me Sunshine’ to No.1. The track made famous by favourite son of the town Eric Morecambe and his comedy partner, Ernie Wise, is also featured in a number of TV advertising campaigns by various artists and hence the timing is ideal to make sure the town is once more a frontline holiday destination.

Councillor Darren Clifford – Chair of Morecambe Council said:

’We are now delighted to have an addition to our publicity campaign which carries the message ‘Come to Morecambe.’

A young, Morecambe based pop singer by the name of Ashleigh Wood has recorded a new and original version of the Eric and Ernie classic Bring Me Sunshine. A video has been made in and around the town, which is full of fun and surprises, features the Eric statue and shows Morecambe at its very best. We are delighted to find that the song and its video have been received with great enthusiasm by not only the folk of Morecambe but nationally. Our hope is that, along with Ashleigh and her wonderful recording, Morecambe can once again become the no.1 tourist destination’.

The Bay Tourist Association said:

‘In its heyday Morecambe attracted many thousands of visitors each summer all eager to enjoy the sea and sand, to gaze at the wonderful view of the Lake District hills to be seen across the waters of Morecambe Bay.’

During this period Morecambe’s thriving theatres featured many legendary entertainers. Music fans flocked to the piers and dance halls to listen and dance to the chart topping bands of the day. Sunlit days were spent at the Super Swimming Stadium enjoying the daily aqua shows and much more.

Like most seaside resorts Morecambe has suffered from the increasing popularity of holidays abroad but things are definitely looking up for our beautiful town. Regeneration of the seafront has revitalised the image of Morecambe which can now be seen as a lovely place for a family to relax on pretty sandy beaches sheltered by one of its many rocky coves. The Midland, an internationally renowned Art Deco hotel, stands stylishly on the central promenade at the shore end of the lovely Stone Jetty.

Throughout the year Morecambe now has many attractions on offer hosting a variety of events designed to appeal to families of all kinds. The Vintage Festival, Kite Festival, Food Festival, Carnival Parade are just a few of these celebrations. One of the most popular attractions in the town is the statue of its most famous son Eric Morecambe himself…..the most popular photo opportunity position ever created.
