Former Leigh Centurions ground set for transformation
Housing developer Mulbury Homes has submitted plans to transform the former home of the Leigh Centurions rugby league club into a village for older people.
The company has revealed its £17m plan for the old Hilton Park stadium site in Leigh, Greater Manchester, which includes the construction of bungalows and apartments on the vacant land.
The head of Mulbury Homes’ care division, Claire Morris, said: “Through our discussions with the local authority a clear need for this type of housing was identified and this development will significantly boost the provision of high-quality homes for older people in this area of Greater Manchester.
“It will put this vacant area of land to good use once again for the benefit of those will live there and those who are already living in the area.”
If approved, the Hilton Park development will see 28 bungalows created, in addition to a 12-unit apartment block and a larger 97-unit ‘extra care’ apartment block.
Covering around 5.5 acres, the land has been unused since the stadium was knocked down in 2009, after the Centurions moved to Leigh Sports Village.
A new road off Chadwick Street will be created to give access to the village.
