Two Carlisle firms add 40 new homes to the Cumbria market
A property developer and a housing association in Carlisle have joined forces to create 40 new homes in Cumbria, where the demand for affordable housing has soared.
Constructed as part of Story Homes’ developments in the region and acquired by Two Castles Housing Association, 12 houses were built in Appleby and Dalston, eight in Lazonby, six across Dearham and Scotby and two in Wigton.
The property services director of Two Castles, Rob Brittain, said: “Rural communities in Cumbria and across the North are faced with spiralling private rental costs and high levels of second home ownership. These factors combined often leave local people no choice but to move away from the communities they have long lived in.
“We’re pleased to be able to work in partnership with Story Homes to create high-quality affordable housing for local people in rural communities, which in turn helps to ensure a sustainable future for the area.”
Rob continued: “We’re confident these new homes will prove extremely popular and we hope to continue our partnering approach with Story Homes in the future to create more much-needed affordable housing.”
The new builds include a mixt of two, three and four-bed homes, along with bungalows intended for older residents. Now, an additional 31 homes are to be built in Carlisle’s The Ridings development in the next few years.
The chief executive of Story Homes, Steve Errington, commented: “We are pleased to be working with Two Castles Housing Association and supporting the delivery of high quality affordable homes throughout Carlisle and Cumbria.
“There is a real housing shortage in the area and the delivery of these homes provides an opportunity for local families to live in homes which are part of a great community.”
According to data from the National Housing Federation, a single affordable home built in the North West contributes over £90k to the region’s economy and creates an average of 2.1 jobs.
