Contract Recruitment Index highlights

Job vacancies in East Anglia decrease by 24%

The July 2015 East Anglia Recruitment Index recorded a 24% month-on-month decrease in job availability with 2,899 vacancies advertised, compared to 3,815 in June 2015.

Avtar Singh, Director of Venn Group, commented:

“East Anglia has witnessed a dip in vacancy levels over the last month, although this is typical of the summer months when hiring activity lulls. Despite this, and government cut backs in supported housing, there was a significant increase throughout June for support workers – particularly within the mental health sector. Local authorities also focused heavily on homeless prevention and tenancy sustainment – despite, again, seeing their funding dwindle – which has led to a spike in officers, team leaders and managers within income and housing operations.

“Elsewhere, as the real estate market also continues to grow, there has been an explosive increase in both residential and commercial property staff requirements, which looks unlikely to end any time soon.”

Contractors gain in remuneration stakes despite dip in demand

The average rate for those securing jobs in July 2015 has risen since last month’s Index, with contractors now receiving an average of £15 per hour across the region.

Avtar Singh explains:

“Over in the public sector, NHS trusts have seen strict compliance guidelines put in place which has led to demand for experienced staff with in-depth knowledge of the Health Technical Memorandum. As well as this, an increase in the number of hospitals currently being refurbished has sparked demand for capital works project managers to assist with the mobilisation of contracts and moves to new premises. It is unlikely that the overall dip in hiring activity is indicative of a slowing down of the market, and we expect vacancy levels to rise again in the coming months.”
