Lidl plans approved for former Scarborough football ground site
Plans have been approved for the build of a new Lidl store on the of the former McCain football stadium site.
The arrival of the German supermarket chain will help the council fund a new football ground for Scarborough Athletic Football Club and a leisure village.
The council approved plans for a single-storey Lidl foodstore covering 1,930 sqm, of which 1,286 sqm would be retailing space.
The seaside town’s old football ground, the McCain Stadium, was demolished sometime after Scarborough FC went out of business in 2007.
Plans for a 2,000-capacity ground on the Weaponness car park and a leisure centre, including a 25m swimming pool, sports hall, squash courts and dance studio, were approved in May.
Construction work, depending on funding, may be approved to begin in September.
Scarborough Athletic Football Club was formed in 2007 but plays its fixtures at a ground in Bridlington about 17 miles (27 km) away.
