Local housebuilder fosters the future of construction with four new apprentices

Local housebuilder, Barratt Developments, is showcasing its commitment to nurturing a future generation of construction workers by employing four new apprentices at its North East division.

Owen Corbett, an apprentice bricklayer will join The Rise development in Newcastle, while Daniel Murphy, will start as an apprentice joiner at the David Wilson Homes development, La Sagesse in Jesmond. The Gateway in Gateshead will welcome Charles Turner, whilst Andrew Laidler, will begin working at the luxury Mount Oswald development in Durham.

The employment demonstrates Barratt’s commitment to employing local young people, with a shortage of skilled employees thought to be one of the construction industry’s greatest threats. By recruiting from the bottom up, Barratt Developments is confronting the problem facing the construction sector whilst offering young people a chance to lay the foundations of their careers.

Scott Lester, Construction Director at Barratt Developments North East, commented: “Here at Barratt Developments, we like to recruit apprentices wherever possible, as we are committed to investing in local young people to ensure we have the right skills in place to meet the region’s demand for homes. We believe our commitment to apprenticeships is a key means of up-skilling local workforces, whilst helping to ensure the industry avoids any future deficits of manpower.”
