Spire confirms closure date of Kent hospital

Private hotel operator, Spire has confirmed the closure of St Saviour’s Hospital in Hythe in September.

In June 2015, the company’s management took the decision to commence a consultation with staff regarding the possible closure of the Kent hospital on the grounds that it is “uneconomic to develop.”

Spire has confirmed the closure and is expected to be completed by late September 2015. An exceptional charge of £6.9 million has been booked in the period in relation to the impairment of assets and redundancy costs for 120 members of staff.

In the half yearly report released today, Spire reported wholly positive results as pre-tax profit soared to £39.4m compared to a £1.7m loss for the same period last year.

The healthcare company also saw revenue increase by 7.8% to £449.8.m, witnessing growth across all three payor groups.

Rob Roger, CEO of Spire Healthcare, said: “We have again delivered a strong first half to the year, demonstrating continued momentum across the business.

“The strategies we have put in place across all our payor groups, whether privately insured, self-pay or NHS continue to deliver well, resulting in very good revenue growth of just under 8%.

“Because of recent actions taken in response to the NHS Trusts’ estimate of aggregate deficits for 2015/16, we recognise that there may be some near-term weakness in NHS demand over the remainder of this financial year.

“However, we are confident that the medium-to-long term trends in this business remain very positive for Spire and that, when combined with our growing strength in PMI and Self-Pay, the opportunity to deliver value to shareholders remains compelling.”
