VolkerFitzpatrick boosts local business on Siemens’ Hull wind turbine factory

VolkerFitzpatrick, the contractor appointed to build Siemens’ multi-million pound turbine blade factory in Hull, will provide a boost to local business and employment after appointing Neville Tucker Heating Limited as a sub-contractor on the project.

The £12m contract will see Neville Tucker Heating Limited take on a range of electrical and mechanical building services on the site, including controlling the humidity within the facility, the heating and ventilation installation and the services fit out in the office areas.

David Sershall, managing director of VolkerFitzpatrick’s building division, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Neville Tucker on this important and prestigious project for Siemens.

“This contract forms a large part of the works undertaken on site and we are pleased to be able to use a local company to fulfil this requirement as it will see local labour heavily involved in the construction phase of the factory. By employing a local specialist on the project, we maintain our commitment to provide a quarter of the labour used on site from within a 25 mile radius of the project and create around 200 new jobs in the local area.”

Shaun Cray, Siemens’ general manager, real estate and construction, for the Hull project, added: “We welcome this announcement, which underlines why we felt VolkerFitzpatrick presented the best bid for construction of the blade factory. It is strong evidence of VolkerFitzpatrick making good on their commitment to us to support local employment and access the local supply chain.

“The biggest benefit of our investment for the local economy and community is the 1,000 new jobs we will create in the blade factory and associated facilities, but we are also committed, wherever possible, to working with businesses in the area and enabling further local jobs.”

VolkerFitzpatrick has an already established working relationship with Neville Tucker, having worked with them on a number of large-scale industrial projects over the past decade.

The Siemens turbine blade factory will accommodate the manufacture of 75m turbine blades and the assembly, maintenance, storage and distribution of wind turbine components and will be complete in autumn 2016.
