Harrogate upcycling firm expands into larger premises

Harrogate-based Remade in Britain, the UK’s first upcycling marketplace, has relocated to a larger premises to supports its ongoing expansion following a successful first year.

After trading for only nine months, Remade in Britain has seen its retailer and product base grow to 300 and 2,500, a selection of which was showcased in front of 100,000 visitors at this year’s Grand Designs Live.

Remade in Britain’s rapid growth has been the driving force behind the move to a much larger office space, almost 7,000 sq ft, which it currently shares with sister company Ecostores, which specialises in energy efficiency and sustainable products.

The premises in Knaresborough ha been furnished by some of the company’s local retailers.

Remade in Britain, in an effort to encourage sustainable growth in the local economy, aims to partially let out the space to local companies that would otherwise not be able to afford their own premises.

In addition, the company has also launched an apprenticeship programme, which has already appointed Amy Moser on a 15 month placement. Amy manages Remade in Britain’s social media accounts, producing marketing materials and helping retailers and customers with queries.

Furthermore, Remade in Britain has created a number of benefits for its growing retailer base, including personalised customer service, no listing fees for selling on the site and access to a range of events which otherwise would be unattainable.

At Grand Designs Live, the UK’s premier home event, Remade in Britain invited several of its smaller retailers to host ‘salvage workshops’, allowing them to showcase their techniques and products to visitors and journalists.

Donna Fenn, founder of Remade in Britain, said: “It’s been a wonderful nine months for the business. Of course we’ve had our challenges, as any new business does, but we’re over the moon with the way that it’s going. We’re adding more new retailers and products every single day and we’re hoping to more than double our number of retailers to 700 by the end of the year.

“It’s been a privilege to be involved with so many incredibly talented people and I can’t wait to see what the next few months will bring.”

Remade in Britain is the first dedicated retail platform for businesses repurposing some of the 280m tonnes of waste produced each year in the UK and currently lists over 300 upcycling retailers spanning furniture, interiors, lighting, clothing, jewellery and accessories.

The company provides a platform for retailers to sell upcycled products through their own online shop. The site is designed to be a hub for the upcycling community, offering a place to advertise courses, events, items available for salvage and upcycling supplies.
