Cut admin costs to ease driver crisis

Freight and logistics firms should streamline back office operations and utilise the resources saved to address driver shortages, claims Chesterfield-based EDI experts, Lobster.

The logistics industry is suffering a recruitment crisis due to a lack of visibility among young job seekers, the introduction of European rules requiring heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers to hold a Certificate of Professional Competence, plus the costs of training and insurance. Consequently, this is increasing customer waiting times and prices for road haulage.

Austrian client and logistics giant, the Gartner Group, not only uses Lobster_data to run its back office processes, but also to aid fleet management. Every lorry arriving at its depot crosses a tyre pressure testing system and should the readings fall below specified values, the driver is informed automatically via a message in his or her native language.
