The Tracey Bell team fight against mouth cancer

The Tracey Bell team are well known for looking after every element of their patients’ oral health. They believe passionately that regular visits to the dentist and hygienist are an important part of patients’ healthcare.

To help safeguard the health of their Castletown clients, the team will be offering a free oral cancer screening day, which will be open to everyone, in November.

Patient Coordinator, Wendy Mahon, said: “We’ve been working closely with the Mouth Cancer Foundation UK and are keen to offer this free screening service to help detect any signs of mouth cancer (also known as oral cancer) where a tumour develops on the surface of the tongue, mouth, lips or gums.”

She added: “Around 60,000 people in the UK will be diagnosed with mouth cancer over the next decade. Smokers are at the greatest risk of developing mouth cancer and heavy drinkers also have an elevated risk of going on to develop mouth cancer.

“At Tracey Bell Castletown, we don’t just tackle tooth decay! We encourage our patients to see the hygienist regularly and to look after their teeth by brushing and flossing thoroughly at home. Our aim is to tackle potential problems before they flare up. Prevention is better than cure! Screening for mouth cancer is in keeping with this holistic approach to our patients’ health. We really want to help people to spot any issues with their oral health, from minor to major issues, at the earliest possible point to ensure that they get the treatment they need fast.”

Tracey Bell added: “People often feel that they’re too busy to schedule regular appointments with the dentist or hygienist or even to brush their teeth every night. We all lead such fast paced lives that it can be hard to set aside time to look after our health. However, it really is the most important thing you can do for yourself. We’re pleased to be offering free mouth cancer screening in November and hope that this offer will encourage more people to book in for this simple screening service.”

The Tracey Bell team are working with Ruth Stafferton, Cancer Research UK Senior Research Nurse to offer this free screening service. The Castletown Tracey Bell clinic will be providing leaflets to promote awareness of mouth cancer and are happy to advise on all aspects of oral health.
