Spanish airlines announce expanded services at North West airports

Two Spanish airlines have grown their North West offering with increased flights from Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) to destinations in Spain.

Low-cost carrier Iberia Express yesterday (September 8) launched a new service to Madrid from Manchester, operating flights twice a week between the two cities throughout the winter.

The move was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Manchester Airport, during which the facility’s commercial director, Stephen Turner, said: “We are delighted to welcome Iberia Express to Manchester Airport.

“The airline will provide further choice for customers looking to visit Madrid as well as giving the opportunity to connect to Iberia’s Group extensive route network.”

He added: “The start of this service to Manchester further strengthens our position in the North West and beyond in providing customers with the widest choice of airlines and destinations to choose from.”

Elsewhere, Spanish carrier Vueling has unveiled new flights from LJLA to Barcelona taking off three times a week, starting from March next year.

The airline is the fifth to announce new LJLA services in the last 12 months, bringing the total number of carriers operating at the airport to nine.

The largest airline operating from Barcelona El Prat Airport, the carrier covers close to 300 routes across more than 130 cities in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, with a fleet of 90 Airbus 320 aeroplanes.

LJLA’s CEO, Andrew Cornish, said: “This is more fantastic news for LJLA and the Liverpool City Region with another airline to add to our expanding list of operators.

“This further adds to our growing reputation amongst Europe’s major airlines as a gateway not only to Liverpool but the wider North West market.”
