The race is on for Prudhoe
This Sunday 27 of September the historic SCA Prudhoe 10k Miners’ Race comes to town. Prudhoe Town Council, SCA Hygiene and Run Northumberland have joined forces again to invite runners of all ages and abilities to get involved. With an adult race and two junior events there is something for everyone to take part in.
The SCA Prudhoe Miners’ 10k starts at 10am and tracks a scenic route around the town. It is part of the Run Northumberland 10k series and operates under UK Athletics rules.
Little legs will also be following in the footsteps of East Tynedale’s mining heritage as the annual miners’ race is calling for mini Mo Farahs and pint-sized Paula Radcliffes to take part in a Junior 3k Race for 11 to 16 year-olds and a 1.5k Mini Run for 5 to 10 year-olds.
The junior events take place after the adult race on a flat, traffic-free course at the Tyne Riverside Country Park. The 1.5km Mini-Run is a starter course for youngsters and parents are welcome to accompany their children.
The 3k Junior Run is designed for budding athletes. It takes participants east along the Riverside Path and past the Spetchells chalk heaps.

Local tissue maker, SCA, is a big supporter of the revived race, which is now in its fourth year.
Terry Scott, logistics manager at SCA Prudhoe Mill and a keen runner, explains: “The Miners’ Race has been growing in popularity every year since its relaunch attracting strong support from the region’s running clubs and local schools.
“As the town’s largest employer, SCA is committed to supporting community-led events that encourage families and individuals to get active and have fun together.
“We are extremely proud to continue sponsoring the town council and its race partners to stage this year’s event, I’m sure it will be another great success whether you want to slash your personal best or just run for the experience.”
The race originally saw miners in the coal seams around Prudhoe, Mickley and West Wylam take to the streets to compete for a coveted silver trophy.
The event came to a halt in the wake of the Second World War, and after a short-lived resurgence for the Millennium; it was revived by Prudhoe Town Council as part of the London Olympic celebrations in 2012.
Councillor Jennifer McGee, chair of the town’s events sub-committee, said: “The council is once again delighted to promote the Miners’ Race with the support of SCA and Run Northumberland.
“This year, we’ve been working especially hard to increase participation in the young people’s races and we will be offering a reward to the school which achieves the highest number of entries. We are also delighted that Tynedale Hospice at Home will be present as our official race charity.
“In the year that a stage of the Aviva Tour of Britain Cycle Race starts in Prudhoe and passes through Tynedale, the Miners’ Race represents this community’s affirmation that safe participation in sport is good for our physical and mental health, allowing competitors to take part at their own pace and in pursuit of personal goals.”
