Middlesbrough cladding company embarks on new era

Middlesbrough-based Midas has announced a rebrand with the completion of work on two major contracts.

The industrial sheeting and cladding firm is expanding into new regions of the UK as it has recruited 15 new staff over the past 12 months and now targets making £5m in turnover.

Based on Middlesbrough’s Riverside Industrial Estate, Midas is close to completing a £2m, three-year project involving logistically complex work to replace the cladding on a 24-hour food processing factory.

Moreover, the firm has just finished a £200k project to strip and re-sheet the roof of another 24-hour food manufacturing complex in Carlisle.

Formerly known as Midas Cladding Services, the 21-year-old business is changing its image as it looks to expand beyond itsnative North East.

The Midas customer base includes prestigious clients such as SSI, Huntsman Tioxide, PD Ports, AV Dawson, ConocoPhilips, Sembcorp, Cleveland Potash, On a Roll and both Middlesbrough and Hartlepool councils.

Managing director Martin Gilbey says the new company slogan, “Built on tradition”, accurately reflects what Midas is all about, having spent the last two decades perfecting a safety-focused approach.

Gilbey said: “This isn’t just a rebrand. The brand is catching up with the business. We’ve perfected our recipe over 20 years.

“It’s the chrysalis and the butterfly scenario. We’ve taken our time to grow over the past 20 years, homing our expertise locally while looking after a select group of customers on a relatively small scale.

“Now we’ve found our niche. Built on those solid foundations of tradition, we have a new commercial emphasis. We’re a vibrant, forward-thinking company with the team to deliver a truly industry-leading service.”

He added: “We want to be a shining light within our industry. It is no exaggeration to say that we are revolutionising the cladding industry with a customer-focused culture centred around quality, service and safety.

“Customers are genuinely surprised by our unshakeable commitment to health and safety because unfortunately the industry does not have a strong tradition in those areas.

“Nobody else in the sheeting and cladding sector can compare with our standards, but a culture based around health and safety is all our staff have ever known. That does and will continue to win us business.”

Having seen turnover increase from £2.4 million to more than £4 million over the past two years, Midas have cautious plans for further growth.

“I can hardly sleep for thinking about our future,” added Gilbey. “It’s full of opportunity. We have a growing business with amazing staff and a great client base.

“We now have a national brand. Our existing clients will remain our priority but we’re looking to grow – and we’re already doing so with the help of our existing blue chip clients who are recommending us for work in other parts of the country that we are going on to win.

“Whilst we remain a proud Teesside business, we’re now moving beyond our traditional local customer base, taking our experience and industry knowledge to clients across the country.

“We’re targeting £5m turnover next year but we will never chase turnover at the cost of quality. We’re here to do what we believe in. Turnover and profit are the side effects of being a good business.”
