Rejected: Plans for controversial £40m Worthing development binned by councillors
Plans to build a 21-storey residential development on Worthing seafront has been rejected by councillors.
Submitted by Roffey Homes, the plans for the £40m development on the former Aquarena site included both the tower and surrounding flats, about half a mile east of Worthing Pier.
During a three-and-a-half hour council meeting, planners said the building, which would host 147 new homes, was too high and would cause home to local heritage.
In the meeting, councillor Diane Guest said: “I was a fan of Roffey until the Beach residences and they seem to have lost their way. Without doubt there will be harm to the historic heritage asset of Beach House.”
The development had 43 apartments and two penthouses, and four low-rise blocks behind it to the north side, including one commercial.
Around 500 people attended the planning committee meeting at the Assembly Hall in Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing, after 1,100 written objections were submitted to the council.
