What is the difference between branding and logo?

A logo design is very important, especially to us as a Newcastle web design agency. It is normally the first point of contact for most of your customers/clients and forms a recognisable face to your business. In truth however, your logo plays only a small part in the overall ‘branding’ of your business.

What is the difference between a brand and a logo?

A brand, through image and tone of voice, should represent your core business values and provide a memorable experience for your target audience. Your logo is a visual tool used to represent your company ethos in a small snapshot, whereas branding stretches much further.

In short, your brand is the overall experience that people encounter when they come into contact with you or your business. It is what an end-user or consumer will picture in their minds when they see your logo or think of your business.

Brand Experience & Brand Identity

Forming a brand experience is vital. As a small to medium sized business this may be a little more difficult and take a little bit longer than corporate giants with their enormous advertising budgets, but small things make a huge difference. The way you deal with customers, answer the phone, reply to emails and the usability of your website all contribute massively to creating a memorable brand experience.

Think Nike or McDonald’s. You don’t need to see a logo or even a product to recognise what company you are interacting with. All you need to see are the words, “Just Do It” or to hear a few notes being whistled, “do-do-do-do-doo”, and you instantly recognise the company and visualise what their business is all about.

So, it’s important to remember that branding is not your logo. You need to consider, is it a logo that you need for your business, or a brand? Whichever you need, we can point you in the right direction. Give us a call on 0191 423 5688 or contact us today to discuss how Urban River can help with your logo design and/or brand identity.
