Calvert Trust Kielder receives a special donation

ONE of the North-East’s leading disability charities has been given a helping hand following a donation from Prudhoe-based medicines manufacturer The Specials Laboratory.

Calvert Trust Kielder was chosen as the pharmaceutical company’s ‘Charity of the Year’ and the generous funds will provide amazing and often life-changing experiences and improve the physical and mental well-being of many disabled adults and children, and their families from across the region.

The Specials Laboratory makes unlicensed medicines, known as ‘specials’, which help patients across the UK on a daily basis. Since 1999, the company has donated thousands of pounds to local causes and charities in the region.

Calvert Trust Kielder is located in the stunning Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland and helps disabled and non-disabled people and their families to experience life changing outdoor adventure.

Jan Armstrong, head of marketing at The Specials Laboratory, said: “When we were looking at local causes in the region to potentially become our chosen annual charity, we were taken aback by the incredible work Calvert Trust Kielder does with people with disabilities.

“Located in Northumberland like ourselves, it gives disabled people the chance to experience the outdoors in ways many never think is possible, which is fantastic. The team up there plays an important and inspirational role in the lives of people in the North and beyond.

“The site in Kielder is stunning and hopefully our donation will go some way in helping the charity with its current needs and exciting future plans,” added Jan.

As part of its commitment to its Charity of the Year, The Specials Laboratory is also planning some additional fundraising activities later this year. Aside from charitable donations, the award-winning company plays an active role in the local community, including engagement with schools, colleges and universities.

Hazel Ditchburn, corporate and event fundraiser at Calvert Trust Kielder, said: “We are delighted to have received such a kind and significant donation from Jan and the rest of the team at The Specials Laboratory.

“Our facilities are dedicated to helping people with disabilities by giving them the opportunity to take part in adventure activity just like everyone else. Each year we help over 6,000 people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities along with their families, friends and carers.

“Support like this ensures our services exist and are affordable for all our visitors, especially those financially vulnerable and disadvantaged people, who receive extra support to meet the cost of a life changing visit to our centre.”
