Sun shines on town’s heritage race

In glorious sunshine, the SCA Prudhoe Miners 10k and Junior races took place on Sunday 27th September 2015.

The town welcomed over 250 runners from local schools and running clubs throughout the North East, as well as entries from Mitry-Mory, Prudhoe’s twin town in north central France.

Sponsored by SCA Prudhoe Mill and with full support of the Town Council and Run Nation, the 10k race took runners through closed roads in the town centre, before finishing at the Tyne Riverside Park.

The SCA Prudhoe Miners 10k race was won by Lee Bennett from Elswick Harriers in 34:11; he also set a new course record, ahead of Neil Byrne and Adam Smith.

The female race was won by Michelle Avery from Sunderland Harriers in 42:17. Michelle won in 2013 and has regained her title in this year’s race. Ruth Bentley (Allen Valley Striders) and Sarah Davies (Elswick Harriers) took second and third place.

The Junior 3km race was won by James Morris from Gateshead Harriers, with Roisin Lally from Tynedale Harriers the first girl.

The Mini 1.5km run was won Christopher Perkins from Birtley AC, with Erin Keeler-Clarke from Durham City Harriers the first girl.

Councillor Jennifer McGee, chairman of the Prudhoe town council events sub-committee, said: “On behalf of the council I’d like to thank all the participants and volunteers for their fantastic support on Sunday. It was lovely to welcome our friends from Mitry Mory, they had a great time, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather to show case the town and add to the festive atmosphere at the Tyne Riverside Park.”

Richard Sutcliffe, site manager at SCA, was on hand to cheer participants over the finish line and present the prizes with Marianne Margaté, deputy mayor of Mitry Mory, he said: “It was great to welcome so many runners to Prudhoe on Sunday. It’s the runners and huge support from the local community that really make this such a great event.”

The SCA Prudhoe Miners’ 10k is a sporting celebration of the life of the local community and dates back to the early 20th century. The race originally saw miners in the coal seams around Prudhoe, Mickley and West Wylam take to the streets to compete for a coveted silver trophy. The event came to a halt in the wake of the Second World War, and after a short-lived resurgence for the Millennium; it was revived by Prudhoe Town Council in 2012 with race partner Run Nation and event sponsor SCA, seeking to establish an annual community sporting event.
