Bardsley Construction announces apprentice of the year

Terry Brownrigg and Jack Ogden have been rewarded for their commitment to developing their careers and inspiring others at Bardsley Construction’s Apprentice of the Year Awards 2015.

The duo won the awards for Apprentice of the Year and Outstanding Apprentice Achievement respectively at the Greater Manchester-based firm’s apprentice day ceremony at The Ramada Hotel, Salford.

The awards recognise those apprentices who have made the biggest positive impact within the business and demonstrated a commitment to developing their careers and inspiring others.

Terry, aged 26 from Fazakerley, Liverpool, joined Bardsley in October 2012 as a joiner, having completed a Level 2 NVQ Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery with a previous employer. He subsequently successfully completed a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery in September 2015.

He received the award and a cheque for £300 from Pre- Construction director Peter Godfrey.

Terry’s uncle, Lee Kilcullen, aged 37 and from Aintree, Merseyside also works for Bardsley and mentored Terry throughout his Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Lee also acquired his skills through an Apprenticeship Framework in Joinery and has worked in the industry since he was 16.

Terry said: “It’s great to win the award for Apprentice of the Year 2015. I always want to complete a job to the best of my ability and this award acknowledges all of the hard work that I’ve put in.”

Lee added: “Terry has been interested in joinery from the age of 16. With a few more years’ experience he should make a cracking joiner.”

Mark Hamilton, Terry’s tutor at Hugh Baird College in Bootle, Merseyside, said: “Terry has been a credit to his employer and an outstanding student. I wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Jack Ogden of Little Hulton, Worsley in Greater Manchester received the award for Outstanding Apprentice Achievement and a cheque for £100 from Operations Director, Trevor Hough.

Jack joined Bardsley in April 2013 as an Apprentice Bricklayer, attending Salford City College one day a week to gain his Level 2 NVQ diploma. In September 2015 he progressed to the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations.

Jack said: “Most of my relatives are craftsmen, although there aren’t any bricklayers amongst them. I’ve always wanted to become a skilled craftsman. I really wasn’t expecting to win an award and was really excited to be named the winner. I want to continue studying and eventually become a Project Manager.”

Charles Beaumont, Jack’s tutor at Salford City College, explained: “Jack works well as a student on his own and also as a team member. During our workshop sessions Jack is supportive of his fellow students.”

Paul Strutt, Managing Director of Bardsley Construction, said: “It is important for us to celebrate and recognise the success of the rising stars within Bardsley. Investing in skills is a win-win situation. Our apprentices will become the skilled workers that we need to grow our business.”

Bardsley currently employs 14 apprentices/trainees in technical and craft disciplines.
