Champagne tasting bar in Harrogate toasts to planning consent

Work has now begun on a new champagne tasting bar The Champagne Concept on Oxford Road following planning consent given from Harrogate Borough Council.

The planning division of national property consultant Carter Jonas, based in Harrogate, has been working on the project since July and last week obtained planning permission on behalf of The Champagne Concept.

The bar, which is the first of its kind outside of London, will stock a range of 35 to 40 varieties of champagne which can be sampled in store or purchased to take out.

The premises, which are due to open on 22 October, will also operate as a bar suitable for pre-dinner or pre-theatre drinks.

The project has been spearheaded by Laurence and Gemma Page-Connolly.

Laurence said: “The British tend to think of champagne in terms of the big brand names because others just aren’t available here but there are many others to choose from. We were inspired to open the bar after visiting similar shops during visits to the Épernay region in France and realising that nothing similar existed back home. Harrogate seemed like the perfect place to showcase some of these wonderful champagnes with their great family histories.”

Kim Eastwood, senior planner at Carter Jonas, added: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for this site. In Harrogate we are spoilt for choice for places to eat and drink but The Champagne Concept offers something a little different. We wish Laurence and Gemma all the luck with this new venture.”
