Meldrum partners with YHN to deliver fast track Westerhope housing scheme

North East construction company Meldrum is partnering with Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) to deliver a fast track build scheme to generate affordable and social housing in the region.

Meldrum Construction Services Ltd has been awarded the Design and Build of 3 bungalows in Westerhope for YHN. Work on site has started, the restricted brownfield infill site has been given a fast pace delivery of just 12 weeks. Using Light Gauge Steel (LGS), a faster alternative product to timber frame, Meldrum are on track to deliver the scheme.

During the design stage several different iterations of the design took place in which the size, orientation and layout of the properties were revised to give the client the most valuable end ‘product’ for their future tenants. The main advantage to using this LGS system is the speed at which it is erected due to its light weight and predictability.

David Langhorne, Director of Property Services at YHN, said: “We welcome the opportunity to work with Meldrum and to utilise this modern method of construction for the first time. This will give us a valuable insight into this construction technique at first hand, as well as the opportunity to assess the potential benefits this form of construction could bring to our organisation and customers.’

The three bungalows are designed to meet Lifetime Homes, Secured by Design and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 criteria and accredited where appropriate. The bungalows have been designed for wheelchair access including a structural design which will allow the future installation of accessibility equipment.
