Work starts on new City Edge development in Newcastle

Work has begun on a brand new housing development in Newcastle, which, once complete, will host 294 properties. City Edge, on Firfield Road in Blakelaw, Newcastle, is the latest housing development brought to the region by local housebuilder Barratt Homes and will include a mixture of two, three and four bedroom homes alongside two bedroom apartments.

Barratt Homes is developing properties for private sale on land owned by Newcastle City Council, whilst affordable housing will also be available, which will be owned and managed by Leazes Homes. To nurture a sense of local community, the development, which is due to launch in December 2015, will also include allotments and public open spaces.

Mike Roberts, Managing Director at Barratt Homes North East, commented: “We are very excited for work to be starting at the City Edge development in Blakelaw. The development will provide stunning but affordable homes in a great location, near to the A1 meaning easy commutes to the airport and Newcastle city centre.”

Speaking on the development, Cabinet Member for Investment and Development for Newcastle City Council, Councillor Ged Bell, commented: “This development provides a wide range of housing choices in the heart of the Blakelaw community, a fitting legacy for the former Springfield Centre. City Edge reaffirms the council’s commitment to creating a more inclusive housing offer, bringing investment to the city and creating jobs for local people. With the right mix of private sale and affordable properties, the development caters for all our local needs. It enables those looking to get a first step on the property ladder a place to do so, as well as providing support for those who need it. We look forward to working with Barratt Homes and Leazes Homes in delivering more balanced and inclusive communities.”

Managing Director of Leazes Homes, Jon Mitford, said: “The City Edge site will add a significant number of smaller houses and bungalows to our portfolio, providing ten two bed houses, eleven two bed bungalows and ten bungalows that will be offered through a shared ownership scheme for people with disabilities. This is not the first time we have worked in partnership with Barratt Homes and we once again look forward to seeing the high standard of properties they are developing for those who need them most.”
