Yorwaste launch new recycling product

Waste management company Yorwaste is targeting the construction industry with the launch of a new product – a recycled alternative to quarried sand.

Over the past few weeks, the company has been using a specialist aggregate crusher to crush glass at its Resource Recovery Centre in Seamer Carr, near Scarborough.

Around 5,000 tonnes of glass has been crushed, producing a recycled alternative to virgin quarried sand. The coarse “glass-sand” is produced to quarry industry standards and is suitable for a variety of uses including asphalt, concrete blocks and block paving.

Chris Tomlinson, Yorwaste’s Senior Operations Manager, said: “In 2014 we invested £300,000 in a state-of-the-art glass separation equipment which helped to meet the demand for high quality recycled glass.

“Any of the sorted glass that is over 12mm is sent back for re-melting back into glass but we then had to find different markets for the glass which was under 12mm, to ensure it did not go to landfill.

“The new equipment we have been trialling over the past few weeks crushes this remaining glass into sand and this can then be sold to be re-used in a number of different ways.

“Not only does this ensure we are recycling more waste, it also conserves natural resources because the glass can be used as a recycled alternative to virgin quarried sand.

“This is something completely new to Yorwaste and we are currently now exploring a range of end markets for this new product. We think it would be particularly attractive to those working in the construction industry who are keen to minimise their impact on the environment.”

Companies interested in finding out more information about this recycled product can contact Yorwaste on 0845 300 8889.
