Sandwich firm lands top regional award
A SANDWICH specialist is celebrating after beating off some tough competition to land a major award.
On A Roll Sandwich Company, which was launched in November 2007, has enjoyed some impressive growth in recent years.
The firm was created by husband and wife team James and Helen Stoddart, and now operates seven days a week with the current 130-strong workforce producing up to 150,000 sandwiches a week from three production lines.
Their hard work was recognised at the recent Made in the North East Awards ceremony at Ramside Hall, near Durham, where the firm’s impressive submission earned them the Food & Drink Manufacturer of the Year.
James said: “This is an exciting time for the business, and we were delighted to win the Food & Drink category as there was some extremely tough competition who had been shortlisted alongside us.
“It is nice to be recognised in any awards ceremony, and the trophy will take pride of place in our new headquarters.”
On A Roll Sandwich Company, which beat off other shortlisted firms Camerons Brewery, The Pudding Parlour, Sonnet 43 Brew House and the Northumberland Cheese Company, impressed the judging panel with its “streamlined” production system.
The winning citation read: “On A Roll Sandwich Company is a family-run business that was set up in November 2007 from two rooms in a Teesside bakery.
“Today, the company produces around seven million sandwiches each year and prides itself on producing the freshest possible products for consumers.
“It has developed a streamlined process and production line which is unique in food-to-go production. The judges were also impressed by the fact that the company has implemented a heat recovery system to lower costs.”
The awards ceremony came on the eve of the business being relocated to a new 35,000 sq ft base on Riverside Park, in Middlesbrough which reflects the impressive growth and will create around 100 new jobs.
More than 150 businesses were represented at the glittering ceremony, with awards handed out in categories including manufacturing, technology, export, innovation and apprenticeship/training as well as food & drink.
