Three apprentices appointment at JWP Creers

THREE new apprentices – including one making a career change - have joined North Yorkshire accountants and business advisers, JWP Creers.

The three, who will initially undergo three years training certified by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), have joined JWP Creers’ Audit and Accounts Department in York led by managing partner, Nigel Clemit.

They are Heather Bennett, 27 from Selby; who previously worked in local government in West Yorkshire, and school leavers, Laura Woosey, 19 from Askham Richard and Chris Turton, 17, from Market Weighton, who join from Tadcaster Grammar School and Selby College respectively.

They follow the appointment of four trainees in August 2014 who joined the firm’s Charities Team, the Landed Estates Team and the Audit and Accounts Team.

Heather Bennett says: “I enjoyed my previous job but there were not enough opportunities to progress. Accountancy appealed to me as it is so central to business of all types and sizes and the wider economy and JWP Creers has an excellent reputation.

“The ‘earn-while-you-learn’ aspects of an apprenticeship are very beneficial to young people and especially in a firm with a structure where you can work your way up to senior positions.”

JWP Creers training partner, Jill Campbell, who also entered accountancy as an apprentice, and is the only current female partner within the firm, says: “As a firm with its roots in York more than a century ago, JWP Creers has refined its own approach to technical excellence and diligent client service and we like to train and nurture our own staff so they can fully absorb this as they develop.

“We also feel it is important as a responsible employer that, at times of reduced opportunities for young people and the high costs and borrowing associated with higher education, apprenticeships like these are available, and I am a strong supporter of the scheme. All three show early promise and I’m sure that they will do very well.

“I entered the profession as an apprentice in 1998, before joining JWP Creers in 2007 and became a partner in 2014, so I’m living proof that you can start as a trainee and take your career as far as you wish - the sky’s the limit.”

JWP Creers, which has offices in York and Selby, can trace its roots back to 1908. The firm now has seven partners and 80 staff and operates throughout the north.
