Local gallery unveils new artwork in winter exhibition

A wintry spell arrives at Newcastle-based art gallery, The Biscuit Factory, as it prepares to launch its new four-month long seasonal exhibition.

The Biscuit Factory, the UK’s largest arts, craft and design gallery, exhibits a diverse collection of contemporary paintings, prints, glass, sculpture, textiles and jewellery and this winter, its exhibition is headlined by Scottish artist Georgina McMaster.

Georgina, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002, has sold out her collection in previous shows. Her new body of work includes captivating oil paintings of birds, stags, hares and - in keeping with the winter season - reindeer.

Since opening its doors 13 years ago, the commercial gallery has supported and nurtured North East talent and this season is no exception. The upcoming exhibition will feature artwork by more than 40 local artists including renowned painter Malcolm Teasdale, Northumberland- based Sue Fenlon and landscape painter Angela Edwards.

Other highlights this winter include Cornish artist and printmaker Trevor Price who specialises in drypoint and etchings; sculptor Ann Decker, who cites architecture and natural geometry as her key influences; and Scottish jewellery designer Rosie Kimber, whose intricate jewellery features precious metals, rough-cut stones, crystals and plastics.

Rachel Brown, general manager of The Biscuit Factory, says: “After Autumn’s amazing exhibition launch event, we expect even greater crowds to our Winter VIP evening. With so much to see and do and a luxury prize giveaway that will be drawn on the night - it’s a great event for art lovers and Christmas shoppers alike.

“It’s a wonderful time in the gallery throughout the festive season, and we have a host of creative ideas - from stocking fillers through to that special gift. In fact you can get all your shopping done under one roof with us, from quirky decorations, wrap and cards, handmade jewellery and homewares, to vouchers for a meal in artisan or afternoon tea. With Own Art, you can even spread the cost of Christmas over 10 months completely interest free, so avoid the busy high street and drop by for stress-free shopping!”

The winter exhibition opens with a special launch event on 13 November and runs until 3 March 2016. The gallery is open seven days a week and admission is free.
