Yorkshire sisters beat Kilimanjaro in aid of Parkinsons

Two well-known Yorkshire business figures have conquered one of the world’s most daunting challenges in aid of Parkinson’s UK.

Sue Alderson, Director of Wakefield-based leadership development business Azure Consulting, and her sister, Sally Butt, Partner at the Leeds branch of national and international law firm Addleshaw Goddard, raised more than £4,500 for the charity in memory of their father, Malcolm Alderson, by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

The total was more than double the sisters’ initial target of £2,000, with more than 120 donors supporting their cause through a Just Giving fundraising page stablished for the challenge.

Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is a dormant volcanic mountain, rising to 5,895m (19,341ft) above sea level.

Sue and Sally climbed to Uhuru, the mountain’s highest peak, in six days, with a team comprising 13 other climbers and 60 porters and Sherpas.

Sue said: “This was a very fitting tribute to our father and we wanted to complete a once in a lifetime challenge that would help to make a difference. Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s, so it is something that most people will come into contact with in their life. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our clients, friends and family, who have donated to such a brilliant total.”

Sally added: “It was a fantastic experience to share with my sister and the support from friends, family and contacts from across the Yorkshire business community has been outstanding. We know that, through Parkinson’s UK, this money will be put to great use, so we are grateful for each and every donation that has been made.”

Chrissie Fielden, Regional Fundraiser, Yorkshire & Humber, for Parkinson’s UK, said: “Parkinson’s UK relies completely on donations to carry out its vital work. We depend on people like Sue and Sally who go that extra mile to fundraise for us and really appreciate their commitment to complete such a fantastic challenge as climbing Kilimanjaro.”
