Emergency Boiler Repair: Winter sees commercial boiler call-outs soar

Despite a rather mild October, reports suggest that the UK could see months of heavy snowfall over Winter, with some predicting the worst snow in 50 years. As we prepare our winter wardrobes and Christmas festivities, there’s one aspect that is often overlooked, and that’s the trusty old boiler.

Robinsons M&E, commercial heating engineers of Harrogate, are expecting the usual high volume of calls in the run up to Winter as businesses service their boilers in preparation for the cold weather. However, they also see a high number of emergency boiler repair call-outs during the cold weather as the boiler that’s been in situe for a number of years suddenly starts to become a little temperamental. These could be obvious changes such as the length of time it takes to heat up the building or there could be something you don’t notice as easily, such as carbon monoxide gasses.

Carbon monoxide is a silent killer in the UK and is so easy to go undetected. There is no taste, smell and you can’t see it so how do you know it’s there? If your boiler is over 10 years old, your home or business is at a higher risk of carbon monoxide gas leaks and by servicing your boiler now, this will help reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning this Christmas.

The less scary side of an old boiler is the fact it can heat up much slower, which simply makes for a more uncomfortable winter in the office or the home. Because this is a common issue during the colder months, the number of boiler repairs heating engineers undertake increases and emergency boiler repairs are a common theme. If you notice something unusual with your boiler, it’s best to do something about it at this time of the year rather than hope to get through the winter. Summer is a good time to be switching your boiler on more often and to check for anomalies that could require servicing or repairs.

It’s also worth getting an annual boiler check conducted by accredited Gas Safe Engineers. By doing this, you reduce the chances of an emergency call-out during Winter and potential boiler faults can be fixed before they become bigger issues. The additional benefit of an annual boiler service is the fact it can reduce your overall heating costs and help your home or business to run more efficiently.

Did you know that having an old boiler in place could mean its running at less than 60% efficiency? If that sounds like you or your business, it’s well worth reviewing to improve the overall energy efficiency.

Luke Kitchen, Commercial Director of Robinsons M&E, has seen first-hand the impact the cold weather has on commercial businesses and suggests there are ways heating costs can be reduced over Winter.

“This Winter, avoid the emergency boiler call out by taking some simple steps to prolong the life of your boiler. Service it regularly, warm your boiler up slowly to put less stress on the components and when it’s time to invest in a new boiler, your heating engineer will be able to advise when this should be done.“
