Black Swan, Helmsley, Scoops Hotel of the Year

The Black Swan Hotel, Helmsley has won the ‘Large Hotel of the Year Award’, announced at last night’s White Rose Awards, which took place at the Leeds First Direct Arena.

The event, now in its 25th year, is the largest awards ceremony of its kind in the UK, and a celebration of the crème de la crème of Yorkshire’s thriving tourism industry.

Take That superstar, Gary Barlow wowed the crowds with a surprise appearance on stage with co-writer of the musical, ‘The Girls’, Tim Frith, at this dazzling black tie event hosted by BBC Look North presenters, Harry Gration and Tanya Arnold.

Other celebrities among the 1000 attendees were Lizzie Jones, the widow of rugby league star Danny Jones, who opened the show, the original Calendar Girls, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos players, as well as stars from Emmerdale.

The sixteen Award categories recognised all aspects of the tourism industry including hotels, pubs, restaurants, campsites, visitor attractions, arts & culture as well as outstanding customer service. The Black Swan beat stiff competition in the ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ category, with the shortlist of the region’s finest including Raithwaite Hall, Gisborough Hall and Wentbridge House Hotel.

Sir Gary Verity, Chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire, the Awards’ organisers, commented:

“…. a very special thank you must go to all our winners for their achievement and their hard work. Winning a White Rose Award is a prestigious seal of approval, which helps show customers the high standards that each winner displays every day.”

Chair of the independent panel of judges, Professor Colin Mellors, added:

“Each year the task of selecting winners, and those we wish to commend, gets tougher. The sheer range of what is on offer is remarkable and the quality of hospitality truly outstanding.

The Black Swan’s hotel team were praised by General Manager, Paul O’Hanlon, who said,

“What a year we’re having! This is just amazing, a ‘hat trick’ with our third major Hotel of the Year award this year….. I am simply over the moon, and very proud of having a brilliant team around me, they have made all this aspiration a reality via their dedication and hard work!”
