Newcastle architects appointed to design Newcastle City Pool redevelopment
Newcastle-based Napper Architects has been appointed to design the redevelopment of the Newcastle City Hall, Pool and Turkish Baths site.
Plans for the Grade II listed complex include refurbishment of the facilities and the addition of a gym and café, to convert the site into a modern health and wellbeing facility for the city.
Appointed by Fusion Lifestyle, Napper has experience in redeveloping historically important buildings in the North East, including the Theatre Royal, Newcastle Guildhall and a series of visitor improvement schemes at Alnwick Castle.
Fusion was announced as Newcastle City Council’s preferred supplier to take over the development and management of the site in September, due to its successful delivery of several similar redevelopment projects across the South of England.
Fusion’s move into Newcastle will see it partner with Newcastle’s Theatre Royal Trust who will run the City Hall entertainment programme while Fusion manages leisure facilities and the overall building.
Anthony Cawley, Head of Asset Management at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “We appointed Napper Architects because of the firm’s extensive expertise in thoughtfully redeveloping heritage buildings and bringing them into 21st century use.
“Newcastle City Hall, Pool and Turkish Baths was designed in the 1920s as a one-of-a-kind leisure and entertainment centre. It’s an iconic building with beautiful design details that deserves to be restored to its former glory as one of the city’s landmarks.
“It will be a pleasure to see these historic leisure facilities restored and being made use of by the communities that they were designed for.”
Napper is currently drawing up plans to breathe new life into the building complex on Northumberland Road, with a remit from Fusion to retain and enhance many original features.
Alan Rees, Director at Napper Architects, said: “We are delighted to be working with Fusion on this exciting project which will see a new era for one of the most culturally significant buildings in Newcastle.
“This project follows on from our successful £7 million renovation of the Theatre Royal, another iconic Newcastle site.”
