Cash boost for girlguiders in Welwyn Garden City

A girl guide group in Welwyn Garden City has taken a big step towards securing a new hut for its members after a cash injection from a leading UK housebuilder.

Girlguiding Guessens have been given a donation of £1,000 as a part of Persimmon Homes North London’s Community Champions initiative, a scheme that sees a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities.

The charity hosts over 300 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Young Leaders aged between five and 16 each week, with activities such as craft, cookery and games available at their base in Welwyn Garden City. The group will put Persimmon’s donation towards a revamped guide hut, which will act as the hub for unit leaders in the area.

Sue Rees, district commissioner at Girlguiding Guessens, said: “We are thrilled to receive this generous donation from Persimmon Homes North London to help rebuild our guide hut in Guessens Road.

“The current guide hut, which is central to the district, is over 85 years old and nearing the end of its useful life. We feel that a new space is vital to allow the girls to take part in everything that modern girlguiding has to offer and to ensure that it remains accessible for all.

“After three years of fundraising we are nearing our target of a new hut, which would have more space, better heating and insulation, modern accessible toilets and a larger kitchen.

“The money from Persimmon will be of great benefit to over 300 girlguiding members who will reap the rewards of a state of the art facility.” Greg Kaye, head of sales at Persimmon Homes North London, said: “We are delighted to provide a cash boost of £1,000 to Girlguiding Guessens, who provide a host of fantastic activities to girl guides in the Welwyn Garden City area.

“Our donation will be put towards an all-new guiding hut that we hope will provide members with many great memories for years to come.

“Persimmon Homes North London has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”

Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions is a year-long programme with £750,000 to be spread across the housebuilder’s 26 regions. Groups and charities who have already worked hard to raise funds themselves can apply for match funding of up to £1,000.
