Quality Freight and Peel Ports expand North West shipping services

Port operator Peel Ports has teamed up with logistics and shipping firm Quality Freight UK to establish a new container service between Liverpool and Cheshire.

Shipping line BG Freight, which is part of Peel Ports Group, has been chosen to run the Friday service from Seaforth, in Sefton, to Ellesmere Port.

Quality Freight UK’s managing director, Sebastian Gardiner, said: “The volumes we are handling are growing year-on-year and this significantly increased service will help to meet the needs of existing and new customers at Ellesmere Port.

“One of the most exciting aspects is the opportunity to reduce the amount of traffic on the roads and clearing boxes from an area where potential bottlenecks and delays exist.”

The move, he said, could slash road miles by up to 500k each year.

In addition to the new Seaforth to Ellesmere Port service, an existing Manchester Ship Canal service has been increased to three sailings per week in an effort to deal will a growing demand.

The CEO of BG Freight, Koert Luitwieler, called the expansion a “huge step forward”.

Speaking further, he said the move “will enable us to offer very reliable shipping solutions for our customers.

“The increased frequency on the canal and the introduction of Ellesmere Port will drive more and more containers from road/rail to environmentally friendly waterways.”

Earlier in 2015, Quality Freight UK signed a 20-year lease with Peel Ports at its 40-acre facility in Ellesmere Port.
