Site Manager recognised as Student of the Year
Darren Sharples, a trainee Assistant Site Manager at Barratt Homes’ Riverside Crescent development in Blaydon, has been recognised as the company’s Student of the Year after studying a foundation degree with Sheffield Hallam University.
Darren, aged 42, transferred from Barratt Homes’ Yorkshire West Division, where he was based for 14 months – away from the support of his family - to his native Newcastle following the passing of his father in August of this year. Unperturbed by his loss, Darren, who’s success is made all the greater since he is in the top 5% of those most severely affected by dyslexia, received his award after achieving the highest grades from within his cohort.
Darren commented: “I’m delighted to have been recognised as Barratt Homes’ Student of the Year. Taking on such an intensive course with profound dyslexia, whilst ensuring a loved one is as comfortable as possible following a terminal diagnosis, was extremely difficult but I hope that my story will show that with determination and hard work, almost any challenge can be overcome.”
Mike Roberts, Managing Director at Barratt Homes North East, commented: “We’re delighted with Darren’s success – he is driven, motivated and excels at what he does. This award recognises an employee who has succeeded the most on our training programme with Sheffield Hallam University and Darren’s accomplishments are, simply put, incredible.”
