49 jobs to go as Trinity Mirror plans Newcastle printing plant closure
Trinity Mirror has announced that it will close its Newcastle printing plant, resulting in the loss of 49 jobs.
A spokesperson toldholdthefrontpage.co.uk: “We have begun consultation on the proposed closure of the Trinity Mirror Newcastle print press site.
“This is a result of changes in the wider environment for printed newspapers and the limitations of the site at Newcastle with old presses and a city centre building with limited access.
“It is not reflective of the efforts, skills and dedication of the workforce in Newcastle.”
Based on Groat Market, in the city centre, the plant is one of the newspaper publisher’s seven UK-wide printing sites.
Trinity Mirror’s North-East regional titles, such as The Journal and The Chronicle, will now be printed at the Teesside centre although the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Metro titles will still be printed in Newcastle.
