Progress made at Gateshead District Energy Centre as structural steelwork lands
Progress is being made to the Gateshead District Energy Centre, a new energy centre being built in the Baltic Business Quarter, as structural steelwork is now in place.
Based in Quarryfield Road, Gateshead, the development will be the first of its kind and scale in the North East.
Envisioned to cut bills and carbon emissions throughout the area, the centre will allow heat and electricity to be generated locally. In turn, energy will be fed directly to public buildings, businesses and local homes.
The scheme is expected to help attract new businesses to the area, thanks to low energy prices and its green credentials, using the latest low carbon technology.
The Centre, which is actually a small power station, will deliver heat and power via a network stretching over 3km, from the south bank of the Tyne into central Gateshead. The initial stage of the project will deliver enough energy to power the equivalent of 5,000 homes.
Recent gas mains work, which caused some roadworks on the Felling by-pass, was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and the main district heating pipes and power cables will be installed from January.
Then the Energy Centre will start producing heat and power from summer 2016, when all the initial buildings will be connected up.
