Newcastle architects relocate to Grade II listed John Dobson site

Architectural firm Mosedale Gillatt is set to expand to East Lodge, a Grade II listed building, located at Jesmond Old Cemetery.

Currently based in central Newcastle, the firm see the expansion as the ideal location to facilitate future growth.

Established in 1995 by Jenny Gillatt and Tim Mosedale, the firm has also announced that it is looking to make several new additions to the team, now it has the space to grow.

The building itself was designed by renowned North East architect John Dobson, with the cemetery his final place of rest.

Tim Mosedale, director at Mosedale Gillatt, said: “We are beyond delighted to be moving into such a truly stunning John Dobson building. We had been monitoring it for about three years before it became available.

“We are renovating it very sensitively so it is fit for our purposes, and are investing to ensure it includes the most modern technology. As architects our experience successfully combines innovative new architecture with specialist conservation expertise, and we feel our new home says much about who we are.

“It offers a lot more space in which we can work, which will in turn allow us to expand our team. We have a number of significant projects coming up in the months ahead, which combined with our move to the East Lodge, means this is a very exciting time for the business.”

The business works across the UK in a wide range of sectors and recently won a Historic England Angel Award for work on Blackfell Hauler House – a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Their work also includes the award-winning Millfield House visitor centre and Grosvenor Court residential development, both in Jesmond.

Mosedale Gillatt has been supported in its move by bank Santander, and by the specialist real estate team at Newcastle law firm Sintons.

Mark Dobbin, Partner and Head of Real Estate at Sintons, said: “Mosedale Gillatt have built up an outstanding reputation as one of the premium architectural businesses we have here, and are particularly well regarded for their work in historic buildings and environments. It is therefore very fitting they should have their headquarters in the East Lodge, which is part of a Grade II-star listed site.”
