Nuffield Health seeks planning consent for new £75m Manchester hospital

Plans have been submitted for a new £75m hospital and wellbeing centre in Manchester.

With designs from Altrincham-based architecture practice Pozzoni Architecture, the 131,000 sq ft site will be operated by not-for-profit organisation Nuffield Health and comprise 60 patient en-suite bedrooms, 30 consultation rooms, eight critical care beds and six operating theatres.

The three-storey facility, which will also house a rehabilitation gym for physiotherapy sessions, will bring Nuffield Health’s UK-wide network of centres to 32.

Barbara Baker, the Manchester market director for Nuffield Health, said: “As part of the services that the proposed hospital would deliver, we are working in close partnership with Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to support essential NHS services which are operating at capacity.

“Another key relationship will be with the Manchester Metropolitan University in a wellbeing research and evaluation role.”

She continued: “The hospital is just one part of the integrated approach to health and wellbeing we are taking in Manchester.

“Along with our gyms and wellbeing centres across the region, the hospital comes a step closer to improving the health outcomes of those living and working in the region.”

Phase one of the on-site demolition and remediation work is now complete. If planning permission is granted, construction work will begin in 2016.

Pozzoni Architecture’s director, Nigel Saunders, commented: “The scheme has been designed to respond sensitively to the site, having operating theatres to the main road frontages, with bedrooms and consultation rooms configured to overlook a leafy landscape setting within the Conservation Area.

“The landscape outlook is designed to enhance patient experience, recovery and wellbeing. Internally, the building is organised around a dramatic four storey atrium hub, uniting the clinical, wellbeing and academy functions into a truly integrated facility”

The hospital is due to open in early 2018.
