Sports retailer Decathlon lands in Gateshead creating 25 new jobs
Sporting goods retailer Decathlon is set to bring 25 new jobs to the region, as it plans to open its first North East store next month.
Based at the Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, the store will officially open its doors to the public on December 4.
Regarded as Europe’s largest sporting goods retailer, the company boasts a total of 850 stores, spanning across 40 countries.
More than just a retailer, the business prides itself on providing high quality sporting goods at discounted prices, whilst forging links with surrounding communities, promoting an ethos of enablement.
Stephen Miller, triple Paralympic Gold Medalist and representative of Gateshead Harriers and Athletics Club, explains: “Sport has been my life; I’ve had an amazing career and hopefully have more medals to come, especially if I qualify for Rio 2016.
“I believe the health benefits from sport should be made more accessible to everyone. Decathlon is proactive in forging longer term links with the local community through sports clubs and local councils by offering further discounts, incentives and promoting greater opportunity for residents to get involved in sport.”
Marcus North, South Northumberland Cricket Club chief executive, echoes Stephen’s sentiments.
He adds: “I settled in Gateshead with my wife, who is from Low Fell, and our family in May and I played for Gateshead Fell Cricket Club for four years in two stints at the start of my career so I’ve got close ties with area.
“As a former professional sportsman who played many times for his country I’m passionate about increasing accessibility to sport not just for young people but for everyone, so Decathlon as Europe’s biggest sports retailer providing low cost high quality equipment in over 70 sports is a fantastic fit for Gateshead, Newcastle and the wider region.”
Inigo Percaz, store manager for Decathlon Gateshead, said: “Decathlon is very keen for people in the region to be able to access sport and fitness which is why we always forge close links with the community.
