Traffic junction project to enhance Stonebridge Cross development
The next stage in a plan to regenerate Stonebridge Cross in Croxteth, Liverpool, is set to receive the go-ahead from the city council.
Proposed improvements in the area, which has been marked as a priority zone for jobs and investment, will see the creation of a new traffic junction connecting the one million sq ft Stonebridge Cross development site with East Lancashire Road.
The move would be financed with a loan from the Government’s Growing Places Fund.
Upon completion, Stonebridge Cross could create hundreds of jobs in the area, according to the council. The development is currently on the market for potential occupiers to use as a warehouse site and distribution hub.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, said: “The area is perfectly placed next to the major road network and we know it has the potential to create many more, much-needed employment opportunities for local people.
“This next phase of work is part of our commitment to making sure Croxteth is a great place to live, with great local amenities and the chance to secure a job locally.”
A report on the traffic junction proposal will be set before the Cabinet when it meets this Friday (December 11).
The area surrounding Stonebridge Cross has already seen a number of improvements in the last few years. A new 20-acre landscaped park called Alt Meadows was completed earlier this year, while the £18m, St John Bosco Arts College opened its doors in September 2014.
Furthermore, work on Stonebridge Business Park West’s first phase, which includes a £12m Geopost DPD parcel delivery facility to create 250 jobs, is due to open early next year.
A planning application for phase two, which would see four new units and hundreds more jobs created, has been submitted.
Commenting on the regeneration efforts, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said: “Over the last few years there has been a huge amount of progress in regenerating Croxteth to improve life for the local community.
“The new St John Bosco Arts College is enabling our young people to get a great education in modern classrooms, we have attracted hundreds of new jobs and improved the environment with a new park.”
He continued: “It has helped reverse the neglect of an area which had gone on for a number of decades with a number of false dawns.
“In relation to the Stonebridge Cross development site, we are in positive discussions and hope to be able to say more about it in the new year.”
