Birmingham community group secure cash injection

A Birmingham community group will tackle homelessness in the city after being named a winner of a special community initiative run by a leading housebuilder.

St Basils was selected as one of Persimmon Homes Central’s Community Champions, a scheme that awards £1,000 to further the charity’s work within the community. The project sees a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities.

Barrie Hodge, head of fundraising at St Basils, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as one of Persimmon Homes Central’s Community Champions, with the money being put towards our learning skills and work project which teaches young people the skills they need to become a success in their lives.

“We have a vision that no young person in the West Midlands should go without a home and we believe they should have access to a wealth of education and employment opportunities.”

The group have also been active fundraisers, hosting a range of events from charity walks to sleep outs in the city.

Amanda Benjamin, head of sales at Persimmon Homes Central, said: “St Basils do some fantastic work in their community and it’s something we wanted to reward with our Community Champions initiative.

“Persimmon Homes Central has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”

The housebuilder has a range of three and four bedroom homes available on its Martineau Gardens site in sought-after location in Harborne. The development boasts fantastic recreational amenities, a good selection of popular schools and an array of cultural activities to suit all tastes.

Community Champions is a year-long programme with £750,000 to be spread across the housebuilder’s 25 regions. Groups and charities who have already worked hard to raise funds themselves can apply for match funding of up to £1,000.
