Liverpool’s £200m New Chinatown project receives ‘unanimous’ approval

Plans for a multi-million pound Chinatown development in Liverpool have today (December 15) received ‘unanimous’ approval from the city council’s planning committee.

Work on the £200m project, which has been labelled a ‘city within a city’, is due to commence early in 2016, with phase one due for completion by mid-2017.

Developer North Point Global was chosen six months ago to deliver the New Chinatown scheme, which comprises 850 homes, space for businesses, a hotel, leisure facilities and a Chinese retail hub.

Commenting on the news, Peter McInnes, chair of North Point Global, said: “Today’s decision is great news and is the culmination of six months of very intensive work by our design, development and planning team.

“We have also had fantastic support from the City Council’s planners and politicians who have shown incredible resolve to support the delivery of this transformational vision for Chinatown.”

He added: “I would also like to thank organisations and businesses in Chinatown who have provided support, advice and encouragement during the design and planning phase.”

The Government has identified Liverpool’s New Chinatown development as a key project in its plan to create a Northern Powerhouse.

Mr McInnes continued: “This is potentially one of the most exciting and original developments being delivered in the UK today.

“It has caught the imagination of everyone from local politicians, investors, the UK Government and the community.”

He concluded: “New Chinatown will be creating a city within a city, and we see enormous potential for additional phases and creating a destination of international scale and appeal.”

Plans for the scheme were presented to Chinese Premier Xi Jinping during his visit to Manchester in October.

Cllr Ann O’Byrne, Liverpool’s Deputy Mayor, commented: “Today’s decision is a key step forward for this crucial project, and we look forward to working with the developer so that their vision becomes reality.”
