Builder helps celebrate mining heritage

A housebuilder has gifted £2,000 to help celebrate the mining heritage of a local community.

Easington Colliery Heritage Group received the donation from Persimmon Homes Durham as part of its year-long initiative to support local communities.

In an effort to preserve the area’s connection with the mining industry, the money was used to fund a ‘Heritage Open Day’ carnival, consisting of a brass band, fairground rides, children’s activities, food and music.

Susan Greig, Chairwoman of the group said: “We’re extremely grateful for the money that has been donated to us from Persimmon Homes Durham.

“The local community has very strong connections with the mines and although it’s important to look to the future, it’s equally important not forgot the past.”

“The Heritage Open Day carnival was a great way to celebrate who we are and to remember our mining roots by bringing everyone together. By making it a family event we hope that the memory of the mines and their workers will live on through future generations.”

Christine Cooper, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Durham said: “We are delighted to donate money to a cause that is close to the hearts of people in the local community.

“We understand that Carnival Day has been a great success in the past and it was a real privilege to help fund the event this year. We hope to continue to work closely with the community and preserve the rich history of the area for many years to come.”
