A Selby partnership made in heaven
Selby’s historic Abbey and a North Yorkshire-based drugs and alcohol charity are discovering that one good turn deserves another this Christmas.
By providing free meeting spaces for Recovery Groups and the Recovery Café, the Abbey has been supporting North Yorkshire Horizons, the pioneering alcohol and drugs Recovery Service with a hub based in Selby.
To say thank you, North Yorkshire Horizons decided to redecorate two of the larger rooms at the Abbey’s Hawdon Institute.
Lesley Dawber, lead worker at the Selby Hub, said: “The Abbey has been extremely kind and helpful by allowing our Recovery Groups and Recovery Cafe to use their rooms three times every week.
“We wanted to thank them by painting two of their larger rooms, making them more welcoming and attractive for everyone using the building. Our volunteers, Paul, James and Dan got together and completed the decorating after spending many hours with a paintbrush.
“The paint and equipment was kindly donated by the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Charlie Forbes Adam of Escrick Park Estate, who has shown a genuine and sincere interest in our work during his year in office”.
The High Sheriff, whose charity work during his year in office focuses on drug and alcohol addiction, said he was “humbled and amazed” by the tremendous work carried out by North Yorkshire Horizons.
“It may come as a surprise to some that a relatively quiet market town such as Selby needs a Drug and Alcohol Advice Centre. But addiction is no respecter of environment and there are a significant number of people of all ages in the Selby area who need help in their struggles with drug and alcohol. This outstanding centre deserves our fullest support”.
If anyone living in North Yorkshire would like more information on the work being delivered by North Yorkshire Horizons to help those people suffering from issues related to alcohol and drug misuse, please call the confidential Freephone number 01723 330730. The Selby Hub address is based at 74-76 Gowthorpe, Selby, YO8 4ET.
