Discover what’s wild in the west

Northumberland Wildlife Trust has received a total of £12,800 from the Community Foundation (Tyne & Wear and Northumberland) Out and About Fund and private donors for a new health and wellbeing project in the West End of Newcastle.

Working with the Change4Life in west Newcastle Partnership, coordinated by HealthWORKS Newcastle, the ‘Wild West’ Project will deliver activities linking into Edible Elswick, Greening Wingrove and Grainger Park.

A team from Northumberland Wildlife Trust will support a number of events in the west end, focussing on encouraging outdoor physical activity. A range of nature based activities including; bird spotting and listening to the dawn chorus, to trees and all that live in them, on them or underneath them, will be available for all to enjoy.

It is envisaged that throughout 2016, the Project will connect 1000 people of all ages with nature. To kick-start the Project, the wildlife charity’s team delivered a fun activity at a recent Edible Elswick ‘after dark in the park’ event in Elswick Park where over 100 local people attended at the end of October.“ Speaking about the funding boost, Tracy Evans, Northumberland Wildlife Trust People & Wildlife Officer said: “This funding is wonderful and will allow people to do things which they may not normally have the opportunity to do such as listening to night time sounds in Elswick Park or experiencing at first hand the dawn chorus in Nunsmoor Park. So come on all you wild west heroes, keep an eye on our website www.nwt.org.uk for more details.”
