Bolton Wanderers struggling to pay staff this month
Financial woes at the beleaguered Bolton Wanderers have deepened as staff were told they might not be paid in January.
The Champion club employ 300 at their Macron Stadium and two training grounds.
According to the BBC, the funding issue has been caused by two transfer deals falling through, along with the club’s failure to sell off car park land quickly enough.
While the club secured £67k in prize money on Tuesday (January 19) for their 3-2 win over Eastleigh, the cash is not enough.
In a statement on their website, the club said: “Every effort continues to be made by the board of directors and its advisers to pay staff and also resolve the longer term funding issue during what remains a difficult and challenging time for the football club.”
Earlier this week, Bolton were given just over a month to address financial problems that led HMRC to issue a winding-up petition.
The Trotters are currently £172.9m in debt and owe £2.2m to HMRC.
Trevor Birch, Bolton’s interim chief executive, has reportedly been negotiating with potential buyers.
