London tech startup Winnow secures £2.3m investment
Creator of food waste smart meters Winnow has announced it has secured investment totalling £2.3m as part of their Series A round of funding.
Backers included Mustard Seed, which invests in socially-minded startups, and digital venture capital fund D-Ax.
The London-based startup, who also managed to secure additional funding from private investors, hopes to use the additional resources to expand globally after it recently opened an office in Singapore.
Following its launch in May 2013, the company now lists the likes of Compass Group, Accor Hotels and River Cottage Canteens among its clients, and claims its smart meters can help reduce waste by 50%.
The firm’s smart meters, which have earned the approval of celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, use a combination of bluetooth and cloud analytics to monitor and measure food waste.
Marc Zornes, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Winnow, said: “We’re thrilled to be solving such an enormous problem for both the hospitality industry and for society as a whole.
“Food Waste is a $1 trillion problem and there is enormous savings potential in addressing this issue. The impact we are having with our clients is tangible both in terms of waste reduction and demonstrated return on investment.
“This capital gives us the resources to invest further in our product and offer as well as take our business to the next scale.”
