New £4m North Shields care home to create 100 jobs

More than 100 North East jobs are to be created as work on the construction of a new £4m adult care facility is underway in North Shields.

The 40-bed specialist home, which will feature both fully and partially integrated apartments, communal facilities including lounges and kitchens as well as sensory therapy rooms, family meeting rooms, is to be developed across two phases.

It is anticipated that Phase One will complete by December 2016 and work on Phase Two will commence straight after.

Developer Kendal House Properties is carrying out the project on behalf of care provider Lenore Specialist Care, which already operates a 23-bed care home in Whitley Bay.

Other project partners involved include architect Ian Belsham Associates, the developer’s project manager, Building Surveyors Ltd and consulting engineers, James Christopher Consulting.

Funding for the scheme has been provided by a Dutch financial organisation Triodos Bank, an ethical lender which is a global pioneer of sustainable banking.

Laura Murray-Walton, Lenore’s service manager, said: “I am delighted to announce the start on site of such an exciting development. Lenore is the first care operator in the North East to develop a facility of this type which focuses on providing specialist care to people over the age of 18 who suffer from autism or learning difficulties.

“It has taken us a while to reach this stage as it was important that we got both the design of the buildings and the care services we could offer, just right. We are looking forward to opening Phase One and welcoming our first occupants in early 2017.”

Despite a mist settling on the brownfield site, chairman of North Tyneside Council, Councillor Gary Bell was the first to put a spade in ground to get this eagerly awaited development underway, ahead of heavy plant arriving on site later this month.

He said: “This is a great moment for both the local community and Lenore as construction work gets underway. The scheme will also assist in regeneration in the area by creating jobs during construction and sustainable care related jobs once it is complete.”
