Work begins on London Luton Airport redevelopment
Ground has been broken today on London Luton Airport’s major £110m redevelopment.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a major revamp that will see the airport increase its capacity from 12.6m to 18m passengers a year.
Work on the UK’s sixth busiest airport, which is scheduled to be completed by 2020, will see a complete redesign of the airport’s terminal, a doubling of the existing retail space as well as a £1m executive lounge and a new multi-storey car park containing 1,700 parking spaces.
It is hoped the expansion will add an extra £1bn to the UK economy, create an extra 10,000 jobs by 2030 and help relieve pressure on the UK’s two biggest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.
Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, was present at the groundbreaking ceremony and hailed the impact the airport’s redevelopment will have for the rest of the country: “The transformation of London Luton Airport is adding to the UK’s reputation for world class aviation infrastructure. Not only will its development help to meet demand for aviation but will also create thousands of jobs.”
Nick Barton, Chief Executive Officer of London Luton Airport, added: “Expansion at London Luton Airport is strategically vital to ensure that we can meet rapidly rising demand for air travel in the South East. Our £110m transformation is also set to give a huge boost to the local economy and will create thousands of new jobs for local people.”
