Holiday letting company moves to bigger premises

THE New Year has heralded expansion plans for a leading North East holiday letting agency, following a significant, year on year increase in business.

Cottages in Northumberland - which rents out coastal, countryside and city properties in the county and across Tyneside – saw a 24 per cent increase in business in 2015.

The Newcastle-based company now has 160 cottages, houses and apartments within its portfolio, which it rents out on behalf of owners keen to generate income from their assets.

And, to keep pace with the company’s expansion, Cottages in Northumberland has moved to larger premises, on Osborne Road, Jesmond, and will embark on a phased recruitment programme in the coming months.

The company attributes its growth to a number of factors including its decision to introduce a division aimed at corporate visitors heading to the North East on business.

Its City Breaks portfolio so far comprises 18 apartments and period properties, all within easy access of Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland city centres, which can be rented for anywhere between two days and three months.

The continuing consumer trend for a staycation and rising public awareness of the region through the media and events, such as the Rugby World Cup, the Great North Run and the EAT! Festival, have also contributed to the growth in demand for holiday properties.

In the coming year, Cottages in Northumberland plans to build on its share of the domestic market while also increasing its exposure to international markets.

“Although a high percentage of our lettings are always from UK residents the number of visitors from abroad is also on the increase,” said Cottages in Northumberland’s director of operations, Angela Mazingham.

“So, I have been working with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) to look at ways in which we can develop a strategy for maximising our exposure abroad, in targeted countries, such as Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

“Like other successful businesses, Cottages in Northumberland is continually evolving to stay ahead in the on-line market place and we’re looking forward to whatever new challenges and opportunities 2016 brings.”
