Romford Market to be revitalised thanks to £1m funding
Revitalisation plans for Romford Market have taken another leap forward with the approval of £1m funding for the project.
Havering Council’s funding bid was approved by the Greater London Authority as part of the new London Regeneration Fund.
Plans will focus on renovating the historic end of the Market Place with proposals including a public open space for events and activities outside St Edward the Confessor Church, new stalls and semi-permanent catering units.
The council will consult with GLA-approved architects DK-CM and stakeholders, including members, traders and visitors, to decide what to spend the funding on.
Councillor Robert Benham, Cabinet Member for Environment, was excited by the news he believes ‘represents a major step forward’ in efforts to ‘breathe new life’ into Romford’s historic market.
Benham added: “We want to attract new traders, increase custom for our existing stallholders and make the Market Place a more attractive destination for local shoppers and visitors alike.”
Tony Geary, chairman of Romford Market Traders Forum, said: “The committee and traders are very happy that Havering Council has been able to secure this funding to help make the market a better place to shop and trade.”
